Tips, Tricks, & Trends
Smart Consumer Marketing

The demand for knowledge is more relevant today than ever. Consumers want to be educated. They don’t only want to know how to turn on their computer, but how it works as well. Consumers educate themselves about the contents and ingredients in the food they buy. The same goes for flowers. Educating the consumer on variety names of flowers in the arrangements is important and how to take care of the fresh floral so it lasts longer.
Some suggestions for consumer education is a follows:

CARE TAGS
Many retail florists do include care tags with arrangements, but the tags have limited information on them. A suggestion would be to create care tags that are specific to each arrangement. This might be time consuming, so make a format on your computer that will have most of your floral combinations and care instructions. Print a few batches at a time on cardstock, or ready made labels and attach to your arrangements.

A good example would read. “This arrangement consists of safflowers (Carthamus), butterfly weed (Asclepias), black-eyed Susan (Rudbecka) and broad croton (Codiaeum) leaves. The water has been treated with Aquaplus...the difference is clear® to ensure the flowers are nourished while keeping the water fresh and clear. For best results mix additional Aquaplus...the difference is clear according to package directions. Be sure to add solution as the water level is depleted. Enjoy your fresh flowers.

PHONE CONVERSATIONS
Sell emotion and talk in terms of flower types while on the phone with your customer. Instead of offering a generic fall centerpiece, suggest something more personal. “The holidays are such a festive time. You’ll want your arrangement to look warm and inviting to family and friends. May I suggest a slightly rustic arrangement with cockscomb, persimmons, red hibiscus buds and autumn hued roses? These flowers are also are known for a longer vase life.”

Your customers will appreciate the extra attention to detail and the personal level of communication that will keep them coming back to your store for future floral needs.
